A Thought or Two

Travel Comparison – Australia v Bali

Travel Comparison – I totally get the push for travel in Australia as a small business and remote locations, as well as major and minor cities, struggle with tourism this year 2019-2020 summer season.

In short, the reality is so are most Australians, bills continuing to rise, fuel is a guessing game and wages haven’t moved that much in a long time.

It’s great to see that tourism Australia, media outlets and the government pushing to have everyone try to do some sort of tourism in your backyard. That’s fine for them when they have salaries that match the Australian travel costs.

I have worked in the travel industry and for many years so I thought I would do a comparison of a 7-night package to one Australian destination Melbourne and one international location a popular holiday destination for Australians Bali.

My wife and I travel extensively to Bali so I am putting my little bit of bias out there.

The comparison includes

  • Airfares from Brisbane flying Virgin Australia, not sponsored but if they would like to they can.
  • Accommodation using Booking.com.au
  • Tours

The Comparison

The comparison was put together on the 23 January 2020 for 2 Adults

Airline: Virgin Australia as the are full service and fly to both locations.

BNE – MEL  Return using the cheapest non-sale fares $796.00

Crown Plazza Melbourne – 4 Star 8.6 / 10 from reviews $1779.00

Day Tour

AAT Kings

Sovereign Hill Gold Rush $350.00

Total $2925.00

The reasoning behind my selections of accommodation and tour are as follows

Crown Plazza I have stayed there and it is n a great location. It has easy access to the tram network, which can take you into some of the great Melbourne suburbs, including St Kilda, Richmond with an easy walk to docklands. It is also a short walk from the Skybus the easiest and cheapest way to get into Melbourne CBD with free transfers to your property.

Growing up just 45 minutes from Ballarat where Sovereign Hill si located I have seen it grow from humble beginnings to one of the best historic monuments in Australia, AAT Kings has been around for many years and is a great reputable company.

BNE – DPS  Return using the cheapest non-sale fares $1099.00

Artotel Sanur – 4 Star 8.9 / 10 from reviews $682.00

Day Tour

Bali Golden Tour

Ubud and Kintamani Tour $120.00

Total $1901.00

The reasoning behind my selections of accommodation and tour are as follows

Bali is a place of beauty but also can a trap for first-time visitors, we hear all the stories of the bad side and we always recommend not to stay in the Kuta/ Seminyak area unless you want the hustle and bustle Bali experience. We always stay at a seaside area Sanur, which is a short GRAB/Uber rider to Kuta.

We have not stayed at the Artotle in Sanur, whoever it is one of the newer more boutique properties located at the southern end of Sanur. It is a short walk to the main part of Sanur and an easy stroll to the beach.

The tour company I selected was purely on ratings on the web, however, the tour I selected is one that Jane and I have done several times, it is a great mixture of culture and the scenic side of Bali. To understand and appreciate Bali you need to understand the Balinese culture, this tour gives you great insight.

As we travel to Bali frequently we tend to use our drivers for day tours, they can be around the same price as a guided tour but you have more flexibility. Feel free to leave a comment if you have questions about Bali tours.

Other Factors to consider

Melbourne for me is the food and coffee capital of Australia with its extensive multicultural society producing some of the best food we have. The only problem there is that it is expensive if you don’t have a look around.

You can go from one extreme to the other with dining out in Melbourne, you can have a $295.00 per person at dinner by Heston or zip into China town for some of the best dumplings for $8.95 for 10.

If you are into sports there is one thing you must do and that is the tour of the MCG it is well worth the $25.00

Bali, on the other hand, is at the other scale of pricing for food, Sanur which is the focus of this article has one of the best night food markets to attend, the food is fresh and cheap, 10 freshly cooked satay sticks were $3.00 a four egg omelette with your choice of fillings $5.00. We have friends in Bali that run a small restaurant on the way to Sindhu beach and we normally spend about $20-$25 for dinner including a couple of fo beers and a Gin and Tonic for Jane.

On this example, there is a total of $1024.00 for the trips in favour of Bali over Melbourne, so this is where the problem lies, it is great to try and assist with helping Australia and the tourism problems, the drought and fire-affected areas, but that is a big difference and only gets worse when travelling to Ularu, Kakadu, Perth.

What the media and other outlets have to understand that most Aussies are doing it tough as well.

Where we stay in Sanur, is a homestay that is of a very high standard and its cost would astound you. When we stayed there in October for 3 weeks it was $665.00 including breakfast.

As much as we can and we do short trips to the Sunshine Coast, Australia can’t compete with Bali only 6 hours away from Brisbane and 2 hours from Perth, they are the cold hard facts.

The choices are yours and there are other destinations that fall into this comparison but Australia like the manufacturing industry is pricing itself out of tourism, it also doesn’t help when the media as forever being so over the top with everything they cover, no wonder people are staying away.

By the way, with the savings make sure you can purchase travel insurance a must on any holiday.
